an interesting, privately owned museum set up by Eugenio Mendoza, whose father was a member of the Fighting 1000, a group of local guerrillas who fought the Japanese (his father was ultimately beheaded). The museum is chock-full of war memorabilia and has tributes to the Fighting 1000 and the 143 Americans who died in the notorious Palawan Massacre at Plaza Cuartel – which has its own open-air museum detailing Palawan’s strategically important role in WWII.

One of the oldest and highly esteemed traditions in Palawan is crafting colorfully designed hand-loomed products. Over the centuries, the tradition has been passed on from one generation to another, and can be witnessed firsthand in this workshop. Local craftsmen are happy to teach visitors how to manually loom indigenous fibers such as abaca, tikog, and vetiver grass as part of continuous rolls of mats, which are later shaped into useful products. Visitors can also try out weaving themselves using the foot-treadle floor loom. It’s a physically and mentally engaging experience that requires coordination of the eyes, hands, and feet. Next to the workshop is a souvenir shop selling various handwoven products such as handbags, laptop bags, purses, sleeping mats, slippers, and folders. Other unique products sold here include civet coffee, which is considered the world’s most flavorful coffee, and rice coffee and turmeric tea.

WAHIG PENAL COLONY: This facility was established during the American occupation. It was however, during the Spanish regime that Puerto Princesa was designated as a place where offenders sentenced to banishment were exiled. A specific area of Puerto Princesa was selected as the site for a correctional facility. On August 16, 1959, a committee was created to study the state of national prisons. The settlers and colonists. The settlers are those engaged in farming for their own benefit; they are the ones whose applications for land to cultivate have been approved. The government furnishes the land and initial requirements for tools, dwellings and beast of burden. They are required to reimburse expenditures incurred for their maintenance and that of their families out of the products of their farms. Upon their release from the colony, they receive whatever amount of money they have credited in their favor, after deducting the obligations they have.
